Victoria is too often viewed as a country of mountains, green hills, river valleys and beaches, and therefore many tourists do not understand that the east of the state is a dry desert and the edge of eucalyptus bushes.

All this is beauty and desolation with sand hills, dwarf oaks, lizards, snakes and dried-up streams. Big Desert Nature Park and Murray Sunset Country are real deserts. Murray Sunset Country is also a haven for Australia’s rarest bird, the black-eared manorina.

To the south, the national parks of Wiperfeld and Little Desert are not deserts in the full sense, since there is a system of lakes here that allows various flora and fauna to exist.
